Today we’re going to be talking about Walt Disney and the extremely CREEPY gas masks he designed during World World II.
It was 1942 and the Japanese had just bombed Pearl Harbor. This lead to fears of attacks directly on the US Mainland.
Now this was a huge problem, and not just due to the obvious.
Chemical Warfare was a VERY real threat, and a chemical attack on US soil would be absolutely devastating.
Because of this, the US government gave out more than 40 million gas masks to American citizens who would be prone to the attacks.
The major issue with these Gas Masks was that they absolutely were not child friendly. They were too big, too heavy, and too SCARY for children and smaller adults.
Enter Walt Disney, who was then enlisted by the US government to help figure out a way to solve this problem.
He came up with a design that he felt would put ease in the hearts of small children.
I don’t know about you, but this looks just as scary as any gas mask I have ever seen, but who am I right?
This design was then approved and about 1000 were made by the Sun Rubber Company which received an Army-Navy E for Excellence for producing the masks.
Other designs with various cartoon characters were planned, but never made.
And thankfully, none of them ever had to be used.
The UK had they own versions of the masks, They didn’t have Mickey on them, but they used bright colors such as red and blue to attract the children.
They were still called “Mickey Mouse” Gas Masks as they were used as part of a game to make the use feel less frightening for kids.
What’s really odd is that most of the American versions with Mickey’s face on them are gone. No where to be found.
The ones that did survive can be found in museums or even at The Walt Disney Archives in Burbank, California.
